Staying at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort

We had survived a long stretch without any time off work and our stress levels were sky-high. Although we love Hong Kong, at times it suffocates you and you just need to escape. We had a long weekend coming up, so looked for some nearby flights and one of the cheapest that popped up was the the Malaysian city of Penang. We decided to enjoy our weekend in luxury so booked ourselves into the Rasa wing of the Rasa Sayang.

From the moment we walked in, it was obvious that this was a five-star resort and the service was excellent. The concierge was very welcoming and kind and showed us around before accompanying us to our room. We were a little disappointed with the room we were given as we had a view of the street and parking lot outside, instead of a beach view. We paid for a room upgrade so I am not too sure why we were given such a bad room, but I assume it’s because the resort seemed to be quite full. Nevertheless, we unpacked our things and headed downstairs for high tea.

High tea was served in the Rasa wing lounge, and it was really tasty and the assortment was good. For those who don’t enjoy tea, you can opt for a coffee or soft drink instead! If you stay in the Rasa wing, high tea and cocktail hours are included in your rate.

Since we had limited time, we had pre-booked a full afternoon of spa treatments, so we headed to Chi, the spa. The spa service was absolutely top notch and we couldn’t complain about anything from start to finish. We opted for a package which included a body scrub, wrap, massage and facial mask. The price was quite reasonable for a resort of this calibre. It was a very relaxing afternoon and I would highly recommend this spa to anyone looking for some extra pampering.

The next two days we spent lazily sipping cocktails at the pool and spying on rock monitors who went for a cheeky swim. The cocktails were quite tasty and good value for the price. If you stay in the Rasa wing, there are select beers and soft drinks available free of charge at the Rasa wing pool.

The beach at this resort is not the best. We went for one walk along the shore but found it to be quite busy and not very clean so opted instead to spend our time at the pools found inside the resort.

Food was a bit of a disappointment at this resort and nothing tasted fresh – it all tasted as if it had been standing out in the open for ages. We ate at four different restaurants at this resort and found all four to be lackluster.

Overall, the resort was truly lovely and very posh, but if you are looking for a nice beach, this might not be the resort for you. The great part about staying in the Rasa wing is that there are no children running around as they are confined to the other wing of the resort and the Rasa wing has a silence policy which makes it very relaxing.
