American Network The CW has had relative success putting out half-decent superhero TV shows based on members of the DC Universe as of late, with shows like Arrow and The Flash more often than not earning better reviews than the comic stable’s blockbuster Movies. However, in a first that might see the DC TV Universe garner the same kind of fanfare that DC’s rivals over at Marvel get when they drop a new show on Netflix, The CW have thrown Ruby Rose into the fold, casting her as the next Batwoman. Sign us up.

Batwoman, the alter ego of Kathy/Kate Kane, was created in the 50s as a female counterpart to Batman, a skilled martial artist and detective who uses stealth and high-tech gadgetry to catch crims throughout Gotham city. Ironically, the character was originally created as a love interest for Batman to stop allegations of homosexuality against him in a bygone era, however Rose will play a more modern iteration of the character, who’s not only of Jewish descent but also openly Lesbian.

Caroline Dries, who’s major TV work comes in the form of The Vampire Diaries, is signed up to pen the project. Rose’s casting is the latest in a long line of moves towards taking a more progressive stance in the way they create their universe, with The CW also casting a transgender actor in the transgender role of Supergirl.

Rose herself announced her casting in the role on Instagram, saying “This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different.”
